  A SOLICITATION OF INTEREST for

the development of the old Courthouse

 and property bounded by Fourth,

Liberty, Third and Cherry is being sent

 to developers throughout the country

 from the Downtown Winston-Salem

Partnership.  The SOI is based on

recommendations in a plan prepared in

2003 by Sasaki & Associates of

 Philadelphia for what has become

 known as “Civic Plaza.” The

 development opportunity will include

 residential, retail, office, parking and

green space that be used as a

 community gathering spot.  Developers

will have until June 30 to indicate their

 interest.  Subsequently, they will then

have until August 2 to send their

 proposals, after which a preferred

 developer will be selected.  That

 decision should be made

 by mid-August.

THE DOWNTOWN ARTS DISTRICT ASSOCIATION  will

release a CD on Friday, June 3rd, featuring 18 local musicians,

most of whom have played at the “Music in the Streets” summer

series. All proceeds will directly benefit the future DADA

Community Center which will serve as a place for creating and

experiencing the arts and supporting DADA’s art initiatives.  The

CD will be available at various downtown businesses as well as

Flow’s Alive After Five, 4th Street Jazz & Blues, and Bob Neill

Pontiac/GMC’s Summer on Trade for $10.  More information is

 available at info@dadaws.org.

WEST END VILLAGE, in the Fourth and Broad neighborhood, is the latest major residential project to be announced for downtown.  It will include approximately 250 condominiums and multistory town houses, as well as commercial and office buildings that will be built based on demand.  The first phase, which should begin in September, will be the construction of 20 town homes, called The Towns, and 45 loft-style units, as well as seven 3-level town homes, called Fourth & Broad, where the former Modern Chevrolet showroom is located.  The developer of the $70 million project is Boulevard Centro, a Charlotte-based firm focused exclusively on urban housing.  Representatives are on site each Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to provide information.

THE DAVIS BUILDING, in the 200 block of West Fourth Street, has been sold.  New owners, WB Holdings LLC, plan to raze the building to make room for a new six-story, mixed use development project that will encompass approximately 85,000 s.f.  It will include parking at or below Third Street with retail on the ground floor facing Third, the Civic Plaza site, and Fourth Street.  The top floors will be residential.

CAMEL CITY CAFÉ will open this month at 401 W. Fourth Street next to the Stevens Center.  The newly renovated restaurant will have 90 seats inside and approximately 20 on the outside and a full-service bar. Its fine dining menu will include prime steaks and fresh seafood from Hawaii.

THE 411 CLUB at 411 N. Cherry Street next to the new Marriott Hotel will open this month pending final inspections.  It will offer live entertainment as well as DJs, and will feature old school, jazz and classic R&B.  The club, which will require a cover charge and strict dress code, will be open Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a full-service bar.

DUDLEY’S ON THE PARK will open late this summer in the Sawtooth Building at Winston Square Park.  Howard Kaye and Dave Hillman, owners of Burke Street Pizza, have signed a lease with the Arts Council of WS/Forsyth County for the space formerly occupied by the Auction House Bar and Grill.  The new restaurant will have a casual dining menu and will take full advantage of the outdoor patio adjacent to it.

MELLOW MUSHROOM, which will be located in the Nissen Building annex in the 300 block of Fourth Street, is due to be under construction by mid-month.  Magnolia Construction has been named General Contractor, and build-out is anticipated to take 90-120 days.  Design is by Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce.

IMAGINE…FLOWERS IS MOVING from Summit Street to the Arts District and will be open for business on June 3rd  in the Patina building at 217 West Sixth Street.  Owners Ginger Wiggins and Lisa Schaner will offer fresh flowers, floral arrangements and customed-designed bouquets for weddings and special events.  Call 722-8772.

PROMOTE REAL CHANGE, NOT SPARE CHANGE is the heading on posters that are available at the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership office. The initiative is aimed at discouraging panhandling downtown while offering direction to where assistance for food and shelter can be found. Businesses are encouraged to place posters in prominent places to raise awareness among their employees and others on how to deal with this quality of life issue. Call 354-1500.

THANK YOU TO MITRE DESIGN and Troy Tyner for the design of Downtown Farmers’ Market posters and materials.
