Winston Zoning Overlay Information

The Winston Overlay (WO) represents one of the action items of the 2007 Downtown Plan.  The purpose of the WO District is to encourage new development which is compatible with the existing urban form and character of Downtown Winston-Salem. The standards of this district are intended to prevent suburban-style development while still allowing for creativity and flexibility in creating urban, pedestrian-oriented design opportunities in the Core District of Downtown.

We encourage all downtown property owners and interested parties to attend this meeting.  There will be a presentation from the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership and opportunity for comments from attendees. 

The WO District is an initiative of the DWSP Planning Committee.  Adoption of this WO District would require the approval of the City-County Planning Board and the Winston-Salem City Council.  The purpose of this meeting is for the DWSP to gather additional comments and feedback prior to seeking official adoption and hearings at the City-County Planning Board and the Winston-Salem City Council.
