March 12, at 7 p.m. when the Forsyth Board of
County
Commissioners

COLLEGE
PARK AT THE GATEWAY
is the name given the former Happy Hill Gardens
neighborhood which is being developed into 150
single-family
houses and town homes. They will be built on a
pre-sold basis to complement new apartments that
have already been
erected
off Waughtown Street. Three firms,
Neicon Real Estate Solutions and the
architectural firm of
Neighboring Concepts, both located
in
Charlotte, and
ERA
Piedmont Realty will team up to develop and
market the project. The Housing Authority of
Winston-Salem received
a
$20 million federal grant for the community
make-over. For more information call 499-0945.
THE
CENTER FOR DESIGN INNOVATION
has opened offices in Winston Tower. It is a
joint effort between the School of the Arts,
Forsyth
Technical Community College and Winston-Salem

design
throughout the region. The center will
eventually be located in the Piedmont Triad
Research Park through funding from government
grants,
charitable donations and corporate
sponsorships.

initiatives aimed
at
fighting visual pollution. The Graffiti Patrol
complements the graffiti hotline that the Police
Department and the Public Safety Network of
the

the

all-electric vehicles, thanks to a grant from
the State

North Carolina’s Clean Fuel Advanced Technology
Project. The City will receive $28,000 toward

remainder
of the total cost of $48,000 will be paid by the
City. The new vehicles will be free of any
polluting emissions and should be on
the

FORSYTH
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

million in downtown investment over the next ten
years. Proposed projects include a new Central
Library, new space for the Forsyth
County
Sheriff’s Office, expansion of the jail, and a
new building for Forsyth Technical Community
College’s school administration. Over
the
next year, County staff will put together a
downtown development plan that matches vacancies
with the needs of county departments.
SIXTH STREET IS SET TO BECOME TWO-WAY
this spring from Cherry to Main Street.
According to City DOT officials, new
construction
and renovations under way in the arts district
area served by Sixth Street have made it
necessary to speed the process that
has
been under consideration for some time.
However, some minor construction work necessary
in the short block between Marshall and
Cherry
Streets will be held off until the new City
budget year begins July 1.
