THE
BROWN-ROGERS-DIXSON BUILDING
at Seventh and Main streets has been purchased
by a Richmond, Virginia developer and will
be
converted to 85 luxury apartments. Special
amenities will include a pool, hot tub and
lounge on the main floor and a 2,000 s.f. deck
on
the
roof with views of the downtown skyline to the
south and mountains to the north. Construction
could start as early as this summer
and
be completed in a year. The building originally
housed the P. H. Hanes Knitting Company.

DAVID HUGHES,
Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church on Fifth
Street, has been appointed to the Downtown
Winston-Salem board
of
directors. He will serve as a representative of
the downtown church community.
THE
YWCA SPORTS AND WELLNESS CENTER
in the Southeast Gateway is scheduled to open
June 16. The basketball arena will be
called
the Mary Garber Basketball Arena, honoring one
of the first female sportswriters in the country
who was a reported for the
Winston-Salem
Journal. The $15 million facility will include
a family center, library, youth center, cyber
café, a competitive-level swimming
pool,
a family water park, weight room and indoor
walking track.

is now fully operational in its new showroom at

located on

SECOND ANNUAL ART UNLEASHED PET PARADE
will take place on Saturday, May 19, down Fourth
Street followed by a street
fair
at Grace Court Park. The NEW DOG AND CAT
STATUES FOR Art Unleashed! 2008 will make their
debut and roll down Fourth Street
in
the parade. Registration begins at noon at

THE SAWTOOTH
CENTER WILL HOST "UTSAVA INDIA FESTIVAL"
on Saturday, May 12 from noon to 8 p.m.
Afternoon activities will
include cultural
programs on different festivals of India, Indian
crafts, clothes and art, Yoga instruction, and a
demonstration of musical
instruments. A variety
of Indian food will also be available.

wellness programs and how to analyze the new
regulations that became effective on February

program, how it should be designed,
