THE
DOWNTOWN WINSTON-SALEM PARTNERSHIP is holding a Retail Summit on
June 10
from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the M. C. Benton Convention Center. The purpose
of the meeting is to inform downtown property owners and retailers about the
DWSP Retail Task Force work plan, which is an implementation item in the
revised Downtown Plan
that focuses on retail recruitment and retention. We will also be
presenting ongoing Partnership initiatives such as parking, form based code,

THE
DOWNTOWN FARMERS’ MARKET is now open every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m. behind the City Market Building at the corner of Cherry and Sixth
streets. Produce, crafts, baked goods and flowers are available from local
and regional vendors throughout the spring and summer.

THE TEXAS PETE TWIN CITY RIBFEST
returns for the fourth year June 12-14
in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot at 200 N. Cherry Street. Seven
nationally known “ribbers” will be at the event, including for the first
time a local contender, Chef Tim Grandinetti, Executive Chef of the Twin
City Quarter, a.k.a "Dr. Brownstone's BBQ". The festival will include music
and a new “Fun Zone” and Marketplace.

BUSINESS
40 will be the topic of a public meeting on
Wednesday, June 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
Winston Square Park next to the Sawtooth Building. Food and refreshments
will be served as new information, including the results of the Business 40
surveys, improvement scenarios, traffic studies, and project information, is
presented. A list of issues raised will be available, as well as an
opportunity to identify other areas of concern. In case of inclement
weather, the event will move to the Sawtooth Building.
CAMERON INSURANCE SERVICES, LLC
is moving downtown. Formerly at 8030 North Point Boulevard, the agency has
purchased the completely renovated 5,040 s.f. building at 300 West Seventh
Street next to Ronnie’s Country Store. They are open for business at the
new location as of May 27.

SUBWAY has opened a second location downtown at 616 West Fourth Street. It
is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. but closed on Sunday.

VALET SERVICES announces
that it will begin providing downtown with a valet parking service in
Downtown Winston Salem this week. Two restaurants, Hutch & Harris and
Camel City Café, have already signed Valet Services as their exclusive
parking management company. Valet Services was created in response to
demand from local restaurant owners and patrons to offer a needed
service to the growing downtown clientele. Valet parking will now be
offered evenings, Monday through Saturday, and available to anyone
wishing parking assistance. The vehicle drop off area for Valet
Services is located at the corner of Fourth and Marshall Streets.

GHOST WALK, "a haunting tour of the Arts District in Winston-Salem"
is now taking place every Friday night. Explore haunts of the Twin
City with guides who entertain and educate. Tours depart
at 6:00 and 7:30 pm from Finnigan's Wake at 620 N. Trade Street. The
walking tour is approximately 45 minutes long and the cost is $5 (children
12 & under are free). Reservations are required, call 723-0322 for

THE MERIDIAN REALTY GROUP
has relocated from Indera Mills Court to 147 South Cherry Street, Suite

WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCE
plans to convert 1.27 acres downtown from a brownfields property into a
biotechnology research and office site. It will reuse buildings left vacant
by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, including the landmark Bailey Power
Plant. The property was most recently used by Camel City Dry Cleaners.
SILKROAD TECHNOLOGY INC. has
received an infusion of $54 million of capital and a new chief financial
officer. SilkRoad, based in the Piedmont Triad Research Park, is a provider
of talent-management software programs which helps businesses manage
customers, employees, projects and data more efficiently. It has 150
employees company-wide. Mike Cullinane was named chief financial officer and
a member of the board of directors.
A GRAFFITI ABATEMENT was approved by the City Council last month
and became effective immediately. If illegal graffiti is reported on
private property, owners have 5 days within notification by the city to
remove it. If the owners choose not to do so, the city cleans it up and
bills the owner. The charge is $25 for the first three cleanups, $50 for the
next four cleanups, and $100 for all others.
LEONARD RYDEN BURR
announced that brokers Kim Mitchell and Jeff MacIntosh, were nominated by
the Forsyth County Historic Resources Commission for its 2008 Heritage
Awards. Mitchell was nominated in the Residential category and MacIntosh
was nominated in two categories – Adaptive Reuse and Small Scale
Residential. The Heritage Awards recognize and honor outstanding dedication
and commitment to excellence in historic preservation within Forsyth
County. Mitchell was nominated for her restoration work on a home at 225
Banner Avenue. MacIntosh and his wife, Susan, were nominated restoration
work at 934 W. Fifth Street, 1027 Frankling Street and 1030 Franklin Street
in West Salem.
A NEW RESTAURANT AND BAR is coming downtown. The Secret Garden in
Liberty Plaza will be located on the first floor of the Liberty Plaza
Building at Third and Liberty streets. The space was formerly occupied by
the Forsyth County Register of Deeds. The concept will be fine dining
supervised by Nick Raba, a chef from the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.
Private “coves” within the restaurant will be a special feature. A bar will
be located on the twelfth floor of Liberty Plaza with spectacular views of
the city to the north and west. Construction will begin in June with an
anticipated opening in late September.
THE HEAVEY REBEL WEEKENDER/CLASSIC
CAR SHOW will be held
for the eighth year on July 4th at the Millennium Center and on
Trade Street. Trade Street will be closed from Fifth to Seventh, and Sixth
Street will be closed from Cherry to Liberty from 8 a.m. to 4:30.
A NEW FED EX DROP BOX location has been established at Wildfire, 709
N. Main Street between Seventh and Martin Luther King Boulevard. Pick up is
6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
THE
GALLERY LOFTS at Sixth and Chestnut will now be for rent instead of for
sale. The apartments are being dubbed “luxury” units with high end features
and amenities such as art galleries in the interior hallways. The loft

BAYBERRY, the remodeled bistro at the Hawthorne Inn & Conference Center on
High Street, has been totally redecorated with modern hues of yellows,
blues, and rich mahogany. A sleek lounge area has been added, offering

Bayberry will continue to offer the popular fare that regulars have savored

THE
6TH AND TRADE GALLERY will open at this prominent corner in the
Arts District in the space formerly occupied by Textures.
ARTS ON SUNDAY
is a sidewalk arts and crafts festival that takes place
every Sunday along Trade Street in the Arts District. On average, over 30
artists exhibit and sell their work each week, along with artists’
demonstrations and a Kid’s Craft Corner. Arts on Sunday will continue
through June 29. Bluesapalooza will coincide with the
Arts on Sunday this coming Sunday, June 8.
It will feature Big Ron Hunter, Tom Rucker, and other musicians.

DOWNTOWN WINSTON-SALEM PARTNERSHIP’S INFRASTRUCTURE COMMITTEE TRAILBLAZER
TASK FORCE is finalizing its work on new trailblazer and wayfinder
initiatives. New signs will be designed to direct visitors to the downtown
parking decks and assist pedestrians in locating key places of interest.
PARK & SHOP
stamps are a great way to validate parking at City-owned decks
such as Triad Park, Sixth Cherry and Trade, and Cherry-Marshall. Books of
100 stamps, each good for one hour of free parking, can be purchased from
tellers at the BB&T branch on Second Street. Members of the Downtown
Winston-Salem Partnership can purchase a book of stamps for $48; non-members
