FOURTH STREET CLOSED FOR WIDENING WORK:
Fourth Street
between Trade and Cherry streets will be
closed nightly beginning Monday,
October 1, to construct a loading/unloading
zone.
The street will be closed to all traffic from
6:30 p.m. each evening until 6 a.m. the
following morning. Construction is scheduled to
be completed by Wednesday, October 10. A detour
will be set up.

OKTOBERFEST will be celebrated at
several restaurants and pubs (Including 6th &
Vine and The Werehouse/ Krankies) this Saturday,
September 29th from 7:00 p.m. until...

THE COTTON MILL
will open the first week of October in the
historic Brookstown Inn next door to the
Winston-Salem Visitor Center on Brookstown
Avenue. This is a second location for the
owners of Sweet Potatoes on Trade Street. The
new restaurant will feature an upscale, white
table cloth atmosphere while serving up the
gourmet southern cuisine that is so popular at
Sweet Potatoes. The Cotton Mill will be open
seven days a week for lunch and dinner. For

SALEM PLACE TOWNHOMES
are now ready to be shown and purchased. The
first six units will be showcased during the
fall “Parade of Homes” scheduled for October 13

condominiums slated for the historic Brown and
Williamson Building at Sixth and Chestnuts
streets will be under construction this month.
Over one half of the 77 units in the 156,000 s.f.
building have been sold. Landex Corporation of
Baltimore, Maryland is the co-developer with the
Goler
Community Development Corporation. A model
unit will be open for the Parade of Homes.
THE HISTORIC CRAVER BUILDING
at 706 N. Chestnut Street in The Heights has
been renovated for two market rate, 3 bedroom

GOLER MANOR,
a residential project for senior independent
living at Sixth and Chestnut streets, has been
completed. Seventy-nine apartments for seniors

will be open for business on October 8 at their
new office location at 530 N. Trade Street,
Suite 302, in the Traders Row building. The
firm, which will own 12,000 s.f., specializes in
civil engineering, surveying, and utility
services. It moved into the Chatham Building on
Fourth Street 4-1/2 years ago and has since
expanded both staff and services.
WALTER ROBBS
CALLAHAN & PIERCE ARCHITECTS PA,
will move into 12,000 s.f. at Traders Row this
month and will be open at Suite 301 on October
22. The 40-member firm offers architecture
planning, interior design and graphic design
services. It was established in 1965 and has
been downtown in the Chatham Building for 13
years.
GRAPHICALLY SPEAKING,
a full-service marketing, advertising and
graphic design company founded in 1998, has
relocated to new offices at 537-B N. Trade
Street in the downtown arts district. An open
house will take place on Friday, October 5, from
5-7 p.m. prior to the First Friday Gallery Hop.

THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF WINSTON-SALEM
has hired a new Executive Director. Eric
Kerchner, who most recently served as the
Executive Director of the Tryon Fine Arts
Center, has been named to lead the
organization. Mr. Kerchner is a Wake Forest
graduate who, while previously in Winston-Salem,
served as the Artistic Director of the
Collective Theatre Company and was Director of
Communications for Historic Bethabara.
DOWNTOWN
BASEBALL PARK CONSTRUCTION continues at
the the crossroads of First Street, Peters Creek
Parkway, and Bus. 40. Massive grading and
excavation continues. Projected completion
has the Warthogs throwing the first pitch of the

is another downtown eatery just opened at 878
West Fourth Street in the building formerly
occupied by Camel City Café. Patrons may eat in
or place take out orders from a menu of fresh
soups and salads, burgers, wings and a variety
of deli sandwiches. Delivery is available in a
2-mile radius and will come on brand new

ED McMAHON,
senior resident fellow at the
Urban Land
Institute and nationally renowned authority
on sustainable development, land conservation
and urban design will give the keynote address
at the Community Appearance Awards on October
16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Anderson Center of
Winston-Salem
State University. Mr. McMahon will also
speak at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, October
17 at the Legacy reunion meeting which will
also be held at the Anderson Center. The
public is invited. The meeting will also serve
as a celebration of the 60th
anniversary of the City-County Planning Board.

THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY AND LEGAL AID OF N. C.
have merged. The new organization, which will
be called Legal Aid of North Carolina, has
relocated from Fourth Street to a 7,200 s.f.
office on the fourth floor of the Liberty Plaza
building.
